Sangamon County sits on deep loess over Illinoian till. The soil series mapped across most of the Springfield area — Virden and Ipava silt loams among them — are smectitic, poorly to somewhat poorly drained, and slow to move water. That combination swells when wet, shrinks when dry, and holds moisture under a slab long after a storm has passed. Nearly every decision we make about base depth, thickness, and drainage traces back to that ground.
Winters That Test the Work
Springfield averages roughly 36 inches of precipitation a year, and temperatures cross the freezing mark repeatedly between November and March. Water that soaked into a poorly compacted base in December is the same water that lifts a slab in January.
